Turn your own description of what each charge covers into a short, plain-English price explainer
A price list shows numbers, and families often find the split between the funeral director's charges and the fees paid to others (cremation or burial fees, doctors' fees where they apply, the officiant) hard to follow. Two owners told the CMA that third-party costs and like-for-like comparison are hard for families. A short page that sets out your own explanation in plain language can save repeat explaining. The AI only tidies your own written description. It does not advise anyone, recommend a funeral, compare you with other firms or comment on what a family should choose.
Steps
- Write a plain paragraph for each of your own charges in your own words: what the charge covers, and what is done for it. Take it from your Standardised Price List and Additional Options Price List. No family or case details.
- Write a short list of the costs that are paid to others and sit on top of your charges: for example the cremation or burial fee, doctors' fees where they apply, an officiant, flowers. Say who sets each one if you know. Do not describe what any family should do.
- Paste your own text into the prompt. The AI returns the same content in plain English with short headings and no new claims. It must not add anything about what families should choose, any reassurance or any sympathy wording.
- Read the result against your price lists. Delete any sentence you did not write or cannot back. Add, in your own words, any introduction you want; leave human wording to yourself.
- Publish it near the price lists (site page and a printed sheet) and send it to a family only if you would send it to any enquirer. Review it whenever your charges change.
The exact prompt
I run an independent funeral director's in the UK. Below is my own written description of what each of my charges covers, and of the costs paid to others that sit on top. It contains no personal or case details. Task: rewrite it in clear, plain English for a public price-explainer page. Keep every fact exactly as I wrote it, in the same order, with a short heading for each charge. Keep sentences short. Do not add any fact, price, reassurance, recommendation or comparison. Do not suggest what a family should choose. Do not write an introduction or closing line: I will add those myself. If something I wrote is unclear, mark it [FOR THE DIRECTOR TO DECIDE]. RULES FOR THIS CHAT: I will give you only my firm's own prices, headings and published documents. I have not included, and will not include, any name, address, date or cause of death, age, relationship or other detail about any deceased person, family or customer. Do not ask for any, and do not invent any: use the blanks I give you. Do not write any sympathy, condolence, pastoral, religious or ceremony wording, and do not give advice to anyone who is bereaved. Do not tell me whether anything complies with the law, the CMA Order or any code, or whether anything is lawful or fair. Do not do any arithmetic: leave every amount exactly as I typed it. If something is unclear, write [FOR THE DIRECTOR TO DECIDE] instead of guessing. MY DESCRIPTION: [PASTE YOUR OWN DESCRIPTION OF EACH CHARGE AND OF THIRD-PARTY COSTS]
✓ Check before you send
- Read the result against your Standardised Price List and Additional Options Price List: every item and figure must match, with nothing added by the AI.
- Delete any sentence that gives advice, reassurance or a recommendation to a family.
- Ask someone who has not seen your price list whether the page makes sense; fix the unclear lines yourself.
- Check the explainer does not contradict the Standardised Price List template wording, which you may not change.
- Confirm nothing about any family or deceased person went into the chat.
UK notes extra
- Doctors' fees for cremation: the CMA template's footnote names England, Wales and Northern Ireland only. A Scottish firm should not copy that wording into its own explainer; describe your own fees accurately for your nation. CMA: Standardised Price List template (ODT file, English).
- The explainer does not replace the CMA price lists and cannot change what they must say. GOV.UK: Funerals Market Investigation Order 2021 (CMA; UK-wide; made 16 June 2021).
- Jeremy Rule's pricing page explains disbursements next to its price lists, and Hyde-Chambers' page explains what the Order requires. Both are small firms' own undated marketing pages: use them as examples of layout only. Hyde-Chambers Funeral Home: an explanation of funeral prices (a small firm's own undated page). Jeremy Rule Funeral Service: pricing page (a small firm's own undated page).
- Lymn and Abbey wrote their views to the CMA in 2018 to 2020, before the Order; they are advocacy for their own positions. A. W. Lymn, The Family Funeral Service: response to the CMA's Provisional Decision Report, September 2020 (PDF; a firm writing to the regulator, so advocacy). Abbey Funeral Services Ltd: response to the CMA interim report, 28 December 2018 (PDF; a firm writing to the regulator, so advocacy).
- If your explainer mentions funeral plans, stop: wording about plans is for the FCA-authorised provider (see the funeral plan job). FCA: regulating the funeral plans sector (UK).
