From the AI playbook for independent opticians

New to AI? You don't need to learn anything first. Follow the steps below: open the tool, paste the prompt, fill in the [brackets], then check the result before you use or send it. See also how to use AI at work, for beginners.

Job 1 of 10ChatGPTGemini

Write a recruitment advert and one-page role brief for an optometrist or dispensing optician from your own hours, flexibility and pay

The GOC's 2025 survey of optical businesses found that 45% find recruiting optometrists quite or very challenging and 42% dispensing opticians, and gave a local shortage and job expectations such as weekend working or low salary as reasons. An advert that says plainly what the job is (sessions, days, flexibility, pay, support) helps candidates decide faster and keeps your time for the people who fit. AI can turn your facts into a clear advert and a role brief. It does not make clinical or hiring decisions, and the registration, identity and right-to-work checks are yours to do from the official pages.

Time: About 45 minutes per roleTool cost: you can start with a free AI tool

A free AI chat tool, then your own word processor or email (no patient, staff, locum or applicant details ever go into the AI tool)

Steps

  1. Write the facts of the job in your own words: the role (optometrist, dispensing optician or other), sessions or hours, which days including any weekends, the site, any flexibility you really offer, the pay or range you will really pay, benefits, who they report to and the equipment and software used.
  2. Decide what the advert must not say. Do not promise or hint at clinical targets or test times unless you have checked them against GOC Standards for Optical Businesses 1.1.10 and 3.1.3, which say commercial targets must not harm patient care and commercial pressure must not unreasonably inhibit professional judgement. Leave anything about clinical freedom to what you can honestly offer.
  3. Paste your facts into the prompt. The AI returns a 200-word advert, a 60-word version for social media and a one-page role brief (purpose, sessions, who you report to, support and development, how to apply) with [PAY] and [CONTACT] blanks. It must not invent benefits, hours or clinical duties.
  4. Check the wording against Acas recruitment guidance for anything that could exclude people, then add contact details by hand and post it.
  5. Before any offer, do the GOC employer checks yourself on the GOC register (not the AI): is the person currently registered, any specialty, any conditions or restrictions, any fitness-to-practise investigation, and does the GOC number match. Also do your own identity and right-to-work checks and ask for indemnity evidence.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
I run an independent optical practice in the UK. Below are the facts of a job I want to advertise, copied from my own notes. They contain no applicant or staff details.

Task: write (1) an advert of about 200 words in a plain, friendly tone; (2) a version of about 60 words for social media; and (3) a one-page role brief with these headings: Purpose; Sessions and days; Who you report to; Support and development; How to apply. Use only my facts. Do not add benefits, hours, targets, clinical duties or promises I have not given you. Do not describe any clinical freedom, test length or target. Do not say that applicants must be registered beyond the line [REGISTRATION LINE I WILL ADD]. Use the blanks [PAY], [SITE], [CONTACT] and [CLOSING DATE].

RULES FOR THIS CHAT: I will give you only my practice's own facts, rules, dates, prices and headings. I have not included, and will not include, any patient name, address, phone number, email, date of birth, appointment, prescription, test result, clinical note, reason for a visit or any information about anyone's eyes or health, and no staff, locum or applicant name or personal detail. Do not ask for any, and do not invent any: use roles and blanks such as [OPTOMETRIST], [PRACTICE MANAGER], [STAFF MEMBER A] and [PATIENT]. Never give or suggest any clinical, referral, sight-test, test-interval, diagnosis, treatment, lens or product-suitability judgement, never say who is or is not entitled to an NHS sight test or any help with costs, and never say whether anything is compliant, adequate, lawful, valid or safe. Do not do arithmetic or count dates: copy every figure and date exactly as I typed it. If something is unclear, write [FOR THE PRACTICE TO DECIDE] instead of guessing.

MY FACTS: [PASTE]

✓ Check before you send

  • Every hour, day, benefit and pay figure in the advert is one you will really offer and that you typed in.
  • The advert does not mention clinical targets, test lengths or conversion rates, and says nothing about clinical decisions.
  • Your registration line says only what the GOC page says (a person must be registered to practise); you did not let the AI write it.
  • Registration, identity and right-to-work checks were done by you from the GOC and GOV.UK pages, not by the AI, and you saw any indemnity evidence you asked for.
  • No applicant, staff or patient detail went into the AI tool.

UK notes extra

  • UK: the GOC regulates optometrists, dispensing opticians and optical businesses across the UK, but NHS sight-test funding and contracts are devolved. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own rules and pages, and this job names the one you need.
  • GOC survey (2025, attributed): 45% of optical businesses find recruiting optometrists quite or very challenging and 42% dispensing opticians; reasons included a local shortage (61%) and job expectations such as weekend working or low salary (47%). It is a regulator survey, not a neutral count, and the PDF gives no sample size. General Optical Council: Business performance and challenges, business registrants research 2025 (PDF infographic; a regulator survey, so attributed and not a neutral count; no sample size shown).
  • The GOC says it is illegal for optometrists, dispensing opticians and students to practise in the UK without registering with the GOC. General Optical Council: Standards for Optical Businesses (UK-wide; 12 standards, effective 1 January 2025).
  • GOC employer checks (read in full): check the register yourself, the specialty, any conditions or restrictions, any fitness-to-practise investigation and that the GOC number matches; do not rely on a locum agency; a certificate of registration is not evidence of current registration; do your own identity checks. General Optical Council: how an employer can check if an optical professional is registered (UK-wide).
  • Employment law: Acas guidance covers Great Britain; Northern Ireland employers use the Labour Relations Agency. Right-to-work checks apply across the UK. Acas: recruitment (Great Britain). Labour Relations Agency (Northern Ireland). GOV.UK: check a job applicant's right to work (UK).
