AI for dental practices: 5 jobs to hand to AI this week
This playbook is for the front desk and practice manager, not the surgery. AI never makes a clinical decision here, and patient-identifiable information never goes into a consumer AI tool.
Job 1 of 5ChatGPTClaude
Explain NHS bands and private fees in plain English
Cost confusion causes complaints. A clear explainer at reception and on your website answers the question before it's asked.
Time: 30 minutes once, update when charges changeCost: free tools work
A free AI chat tool, with the current NHS charges open to check

Use it at reception, on your website and in treatment plan letters.
The exact prompt
Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
Write a plain-English explainer of dental costs for patients of a [UK] [mixed NHS and private] practice in [England].
NHS charges (I've checked these on the NHS website): [Band 1 £, Band 2 £, Band 3 £, urgent £, what each covers].

Under 300 words, friendly, no clinical advice.
✓ Check before you send
Every figure matches the NHS website on the day you publish.

Run the prompt below with your complaints procedure timescales.

Questions dental practices ask
Can we put patient information into ChatGPT?
No. Patient data is sensitive health data and belongs in your clinical systems. Use AI only with templates and anonymised, non-clinical text, or tools your practice has formally approved.
Can AI write clinical advice for patients?
Only by reformatting advice a clinician has written, and a clinician must approve the final wording. AI should never add clinical content.
Which AI tool is free?
The free plans of ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Claude are fine for admin writing like fee explainers and templates. Your practice management software sends the actual messages.
Privacy tip: don't paste customers' full names, addresses or other personal details into AI tools unless you need to and you've checked the tool's privacy settings.
