From the AI playbook for locksmiths

New to AI? You don't need to learn anything first. Follow the steps below: open the tool, paste the prompt, fill in the [brackets], then check the result before you use or send it. See also how to use AI at work, for beginners.

Job 1 of 16ChatGPTGemini

Write a pricing page and phone script that say what a call-out costs and what could change it

Customers who search in a panic have been burned by a low headline price that turned into hundreds of pounds. Owners interviewed in the trade press say that being open about price before you travel is what sets them apart. A plain page and phone script that give your real call-out fee, typical prices and what could change the price on the day are the clearest way to show it. AI can turn your own prices and rules into plain wording. You set every price and must not publish one you would not charge.

Steps

  1. Write down your real prices: call-out fee, typical prices for the jobs you do most (gaining entry, a lock change, a cylinder replacement, key cutting) and any out-of-hours or distance surcharge, all shown the way you charge VAT.
  2. List what could change the price on the day, such as a higher-security lock, parts or a second visit, and decide the point at which you stop and give a new total before going further.
  3. Paste the prices and the rules into the prompt, with no customer details, and ask for the page text and a 100-word phone script.
  4. Read the output line by line against your price list and delete any wording that implies a price you would not charge, such as a "from" price that few jobs reach.
  5. Publish the page, give the script to everyone who answers your phone, and date the page so you remember to change it before you change your prices.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
I am a UK locksmith (sole trader or small shop). Write a plain-English pricing page and a phone script using ONLY the facts below. Do not invent any price, discount, guarantee, response time or qualification, do not use "from" prices unless I give a typical price that most jobs reach, and do not describe how any lock is opened, bypassed or drilled.
Business name, area covered and opening hours: [text].
Call-out fee, including VAT if I charge it: £[amount]. Out-of-hours or distance surcharge: [text or none].
Typical prices for each job type, with what each includes: [list].
What can change the price on the day, and what I do if it does (I give the customer the new total before I carry on): [list].
How I take payment and what paperwork I give the customer: [list].
How a customer can check who I am (for example name on the van, ID badge, trade body membership, only if true): [list].
Produce: (1) page text under the headings call-out fee, typical prices, what can change the price, what you will be told before work starts, how to pay, and how to check who we are; (2) a 100-word phone script that gives the call-out fee and the typical price range up front, asks for the postcode, and says I will confirm any change in the total before I start. Plain, calm tone.

✓ Check before you send

  • Every price on the page is one you will actually charge, with VAT shown the way you charge it.
  • The call-out fee and typical prices are on the page before a customer commits, not only once they ask.
  • The phone script gives the same figures as the page, and everyone who answers calls has read it.
  • Nothing says or implies a trade body membership or qualification unless it is true and current.
  • The page has a date and you will update it before you change your prices.

UK notes extra

  • The CMA's price transparency guidance (UK) covers what pricing information must include, including mandatory fees, taxes and charges, and warns against 'drip pricing' (charges added as the customer proceeds) and partitioned pricing. Read your page against it. CMA: price transparency guidance (UK).
  • For work agreed at a customer's home, the GOV.UK door to door sales page says you must give certain information before the order is placed, including the total price or how it will be calculated. Check how it applies to emergency call-outs. GOV.UK: door to door sales (information and cancellation rights).
  • Unclear or one-sided terms can be challenged as unfair, so keep any terms on the page plain. CMA: unfair contract terms guidance.
