Work out why a video didn't get views, then change one thing
Low views could be the topic, the thumbnail, the title or the first 30 seconds. Reading a few numbers in order tells you which, so you stop changing everything at once.
Steps
- In YouTube Studio, open the video's analytics and note: impressions, click-through rate, average view duration, and how many viewers are still watching at 30 seconds.
- Note the same numbers for 2 or 3 of your normal videos for comparison.
- Paste them into the prompt below.
- Pick the one change it suggests, try it on your next video, and compare again.
The exact prompt
I'm a [YouTube / TikTok] creator in the [niche] niche. Help me diagnose why one video under-performed. This video: impressions [n], CTR [%], average view duration [mm:ss] of [length], retention at 30s [%], traffic sources [top 3]. My typical video: impressions [n], CTR [%], AVD [mm:ss], retention at 30s [%]. Go through it in order: was it shown to people (impressions), did they click (CTR: title/thumbnail), did they stay (retention: hook/pacing), or was it the topic? Give ONE most likely cause and ONE change to test next. Base it only on my numbers, and say if the data is too small to tell.
✓ Check before you send
- Numbers are copied correctly from your analytics.
- You test one change at a time.
- Small channels have noisy data. Don't over-read one video.
UK notes extra
- If you change titles on sponsored videos, ads still need clear labelling. ASA: influencers' guide.
