AI for electricians: 5 jobs to hand to AI this week

AI can't test a circuit, and it must never be the one deciding what's safe. It can turn your findings and notes into customer-friendly paperwork while you get on with the job.

Job 1 of 5ChatGPTGeminiCopilot

Explain EICR findings to a customer in plain English

C1, C2, C3 and FI mean nothing to most homeowners and landlords. A clear explanation gets remedial work approved faster and avoids "you're just upselling".

Time: About 10 minutes per reportCost: free tools work

A free AI chat tool (ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot)

Steps

  1. Finish and sign the EICR as normal. AI plays no part in the inspection or the coding.
  2. Copy the observations and codes you gave, without the property address or client name.
  3. Paste the prompt below with your observations and remedial prices.
  4. Check every explanation matches what you found. Delete anything that overstates or understates the risk.
  5. Send it alongside the official report, never instead of it.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
I'm a [UK] electrician. Turn my EICR observations into a plain-English summary for a [homeowner / landlord].
For each observation: the code I gave, what that code means in one sentence (C1 danger present, C2 potentially dangerous, C3 improvement recommended, FI further investigation required), and the remedial work with my price.
Use ONLY my observations, codes and prices. Don't change or add any code, and don't add safety advice of your own.
Finish with: overall result [SATISFACTORY / UNSATISFACTORY] as on my report, and next steps: [e.g. book remedial work; we'll confirm in writing once done].
Under 250 words.

Observations, codes and prices:
[paste]

✓ Check before you send

  • Every code is exactly as on your signed report.
  • Nothing reads as scaremongering, or as playing down a C1 or C2.
  • Prices match your quote, and VAT is shown correctly.

Job 2 of 5ChatGPTCopilot

Quote an EV charger or rewire with clear inclusions

Bigger jobs go wrong on what wasn't included: making good, decorating, DNO approval, a consumer unit upgrade. Spelling it out wins trust.

Time: About 10 minutesCost: free tools work

A free AI chat tool, then your quoting or invoicing app

Steps

  1. After the survey, voice-note what you found: supply, earthing, board, cable route, distances and anything that changes the price.
  2. Paste the prompt below with your notes and prices.
  3. Fix anything wrong and add your terms.
  4. Paste into your quoting app (Tradify, Powered Now, Xero or similar) or a document and send.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
Write a written quote from a [UK] electrician for a [EV charger install / full rewire / consumer unit upgrade].
Plain [British] English. Sections:
1. What we found (from my survey notes, no technical waffle)
2. Work included (bullets)
3. Not included (bullets), e.g. making good/plastering, decorating, groundworks
4. Things outside our control that could change the price: [e.g. DNO approval or supply upgrade]
5. Price: materials, labour, VAT [inc / ex / not VAT registered], total. Use ONLY my prices; write [PRICE NEEDED] if missing.
6. Certificates and notification we'll provide: [e.g. EIC, Building Regs notification via my scheme]
7. Valid for [30] days.
Don't add grants, guarantees or timescales I haven't given.

Survey notes and prices:
[paste]

✓ Check before you send

  • No grant is mentioned unless you've checked it's still running. EV grants change often.
  • Certificates and notifications listed are the ones you'll actually provide.
  • Exclusions are clear, especially making good after a rewire.

WhatsApp Business (free) quick replies, written once with a free AI chat tool

Steps

  1. List your 5 most common enquiries, e.g. extra sockets, EV charger, fault finding, EICR, lighting.

  4. Set an away message for when you're on a job.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
Write WhatsApp quick replies for a [UK] electrician, one for each of these enquiry types: [list].
Each under 60 words, friendly, plain [British] English.
Each asks for the 2-4 things I need to price it, e.g. a photo of the consumer unit, distance from the board, age of the property, whether it's tripping now.
Any reply about faults must include: "If you smell burning or see scorching, switch off at the main switch if it's safe to do so and call [my number] or an emergency electrician now."
Sign off as [name, business].

✓ Check before you send

  • The safety line is wording you're happy with and has your real number.
  • You only ask for what you really need.
  • Away hours match when you actually reply.

UK notes extra

  • Replying to enquiries is fine, but sending offers to people who haven't opted in can break direct marketing rules. ICO: direct marketing rules.

Job 4 of 5Google SheetsChatGPT

Set up EICR renewal reminders for landlord customers

Landlords need a fresh EICR at least every five years and many lose track. A simple reminder sheet is repeat work that books itself.

Time: 30 minutes once, then 5 minutes a monthCost: free tools work

Google Sheets (free) plus a free AI chat tool for formulas and wording

Steps

  1. Make a sheet: landlord first name, property area (not full address), last EICR date, next inspection date from the report, and whether they agreed to reminders.
  2. Run the prompt below for formulas and the reminder text.
  3. Once a month, filter for anything due in the next 90 days.
  4. Message only landlords who agreed to hear from you.

The exact prompt

Copy, paste, then fill in the [brackets]
I have a Google Sheet of landlord customers. Columns: A first name, B area, C last EICR date, D next inspection date recommended on the report (may be blank), E consented to reminders (Y/N).
1. Formula for F: due date = D if filled, otherwise 5 years after C.
2. Formula for G: days until due. Formula for H: "OVERDUE" if negative, "DUE SOON" if under 90, else blank.
3. How to add red/amber conditional formatting to H.
4. A reminder message under 70 words: their inspection is due on [date], how to book [link/number]. No scare tactics.

✓ Check before you send

  • Test the formulas with a couple of known dates.
  • The report's recommended date is used when it's sooner than five years.
  • Only landlords marked Y get messages.

Job 5 of 5Google Business ProfileCanvaChatGPT

Questions electricians ask

Can AI tell me if an installation is safe?

No. Inspection, testing and coding are your professional judgement. AI only helps you explain your findings to customers in plain English.

Is it safe to put customer details into AI?

Leave out names and addresses. "3-bed semi, 1990s board" is enough for the AI to write a clear summary, and you add the details in your certificate software.

Which AI tool is free?

The free plans of ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Claude handle all the jobs here. WhatsApp Business is free for quick replies.

Privacy tip: don't paste customers' full names, addresses or other personal details into AI tools unless you need to and you've checked the tool's privacy settings.
